Let's Take Back the Tug
Come out and support the cause!
Historically, the Annapolis side of the Eastport vs. Annapolis Tug-of-War has been ... well, lame. That is about to change. Mainstreets Annapolis Partnership is leading Annapolis in Taking Back the Tug and needs all hands on deck.
Billed as the longest International Tug-of-War over water in the world, the Eastport vs. Annapolis Tug was originally conceived by the residents of Eastport over a decade ago when the Compromise Street bridge was closed. Feeling excluded from the rest of the city, Eastport residents and citizens declared war against Annapolis and launched their plan to secede. From this rebellion, the Maritime Republic of Eastport was born. Although the bridge has since re-opened, Eastport citizens remember this time of troubles yearly by declaring a symbolic War of Independence. Thus, the annual Tug-of- War is a celebration of the geographical and, some would argue, philosophical differences between Eastport and Annapolis. Proceeds from the annual tug benefit local non-profits.
While Annapolis has had respectable wins throughout the history of the Tug, there has been a noted lack of respectable parties. This year, MainStreets Annapolis Partnership will attempt to Take Back the Tug — and make this the challenge that it was originally meant to be. Our focus is on expanding the Annapolis side, not cannibalizing the party in Eastport. We’re looking to engage the businesses on the downtown side of the bridge, bring in some great local music, food, and yes, beer. We have selected one of our Main Streets establishments, Red Red Wine to provide wine and signature libations. We are inviting the brick and mortar eateries to provide food - please contact us asap if you are interested. And we will have live music on the Annapolis side.
We will be taking back the tug at Susan Campbell Park. Tugs begin at the crack of noon. We hope to host 7+ tugs this year, which means we need at least 7 sponsors and about 297 warriors willing to pull for a cause on our side of the tug! The post tug party lasts until 5pm and will be a blast for adults and kids, alike. If you are interested in planning, executing, or participating in this not-to-be-missed event, please contact us! We need Tug-of-Warriors, sponsors, volunteers, and all the enthusiastic attendees we can get!
We also encourage you to spread the word to any lists, organizations, residents and tourists that you have access to, that this year, Annapolis is planning a party! So even if you can’t or don’t want to tug, come out and cheer!
