CLIMB
The CLIMB® program at Wellness House of Annapolis is six weekly 1½-hour group meetings for elementary-age children whose parent or loved one is living with cancer. Specially trained leaders use conversation, activities, arts and crafts, and journaling to help kids identify, communicate, and appropriately express their complex, often unfamiliar, and sometimes scary feelings. They develop coping skills; learn about cancer, treatments, and possible side effects; and most importantly, understand they’re not alone — other children are dealing with the same emotional upheaval.
Each week, the session focuses on a select topic and emotion. The children are given their own workbook designed to help them capture their progress, which they’re encouraged to share with their families at home. Each 1½ hour session begins with a group dinner provided by Wellness House of Annapolis for the children and their families. After this social time, the children break into their groups for one hour, while parents participate in a structured educational program.
Topics for parents include; How to Talk with Your Children About Cancer, The Value of Self-Care, Nutrition for Cancer Patients, The Benefits of Yoga During Cancer Treatment, Journaling and Meditation to Calm the Spirit, and Understanding the Value of Healing Energy. Parents are given the opportunity to share their journey and express concerns and strategies for helping their children cope during this difficult family time. Parents are encouraged to talk openly and honestly with their children.
